My name is David Mebane and I am a lifelong traveler that experienced my first international trip as a 2nd grader, and I haven’t stopped since. I founded Fat Tire Tours in Paris, France in 1999 and love showing people around the City of Light. That passion has grown to include other incredible destinations around the globe, and is the genesis for Kairos Tours. I don't know every destination on the globe, but I do know several well, and I love to take people with me to create experiences and memories that last a lifetime.
I live in Austin, Texas with my wife Kelly and our son Weston and daughter Caroline. However, we spend as much time as we can elsewhere since there is nothing better than an adventure with family and friends.
Mexico City's story is an epic tale stretching back millennia, a captivating narrative built upon layers of civilization that rise from an ancient lakebed. Its remarkable origins trace to Tenochtitlan, the awe-inspiring capital of the mighty Aztec Empire, founded in 1325 AD on islands within Lake Texcoco. This "floating city" was a marvel of engineering and urban planning, boasting vast temples, intricate canals, and a highly sophisticated society that dominated Mesoamerica. From these legendary beginnings, Mexico City inherited a powerful spirit and a foundation steeped in ancient grandeur, embodying the heart of a complex and advanced civilization.
The arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century marked a dramatic turning point, as the grandeur of Tenochtitlan gave way to the construction of Mexico City, the thriving capital of New Spain, built directly upon the Aztec ruins. This period saw an incredible cultural fusion, blending indigenous traditions with European influences in art, architecture, and daily life. Magnificent cathedrals, grand palaces, and beautiful plazas rose from the ancient foundations, transforming the city into a vibrant colonial center. It became a crucible of creativity and intellectual thought, a place where a new identity was forged from the dramatic clash and eventual melding of two distinct worlds.
Today, Mexico City stands as one of the world's largest and most dynamic metropolises, a stunning blend of ancient legacies, colonial masterpieces, and cutting-edge modernity. Its vast Zócalo, the historic main square, pulses with life, surrounded by centuries of history. From the ancient pyramids echoing past empires to world-class museums and a vibrant contemporary arts scene, the city continuously draws visitors into its rich narrative. Mexico City is more than just a capital; it's a living testament to human endurance, cultural richness, and continuous evolution, where every street corner tells a story from its extraordinary past.
