I founded Fat Tire Tours in Paris, France in 1999 and love showing people around the City of Light. Nice was founded by Greek settlers around 350 BC as a trading post along the Mediterranean, later passing through Roman, Italian, and Savoyard hands before becoming permanently French in 1860. That layered past shaped the city's character, from its Italian-style architecture to its position as a crossroads of Mediterranean trade and culture for over two thousand years. By the 19th century, Nice had become a favored winter retreat for European aristocracy, drawn by its mild climate and dramatic coastline, laying the foundation for the Côte d'Azur's enduring reputation. Just down the coast, Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since the 13th century, and transformed from a small fishing port into a global symbol of wealth and glamour after the Monte Carlo Casino opened in 1863, ushering in over a century of prosperity for the tiny principality.
Lisbon ranks among the oldest cities in Western Europe, with roots stretching back over two thousand years through Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish rule. Its golden age arrived during the Age of Discovery, when Portuguese explorers set sail from the city and returned with the wealth and influence that built much of its grandest architecture. A catastrophic earthquake in 1755 destroyed large portions of the city, prompting a rebuild that introduced the wide, structured boulevards still associated with downtown Lisbon today. Nearby, Sintra served for centuries as the summer retreat of Portuguese royalty, prized for its cool, forested hills, and its ornate 19th-century palaces reflect the era's taste for bold color and eclectic design.
Porto lends its name to the entire country, its Roman title Portus Cale evolving over time into "Portugal." Built along the banks of the Douro River, the city's fortunes have long been tied to the wine trade, with Port wine aged and stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia since the 17th century. Porto's Ribeira district, with its colorful, stacked buildings along the riverfront, has retained much of its medieval character and remains one of the best-preserved historic riverfronts in Europe.
